My Antonia By Willa Cather The Inability to Provide for His Family, and Why it Drove Mr. Shimerda to Suicide My Antonia, by Willa Cather, is a novel about Jim Burden and his relationship and experiences growing up with Antonia Shimerda in Nebraska. Throughout the book Jim reflects on his memories of Nebraska and the Shimerda family, often times in a sad and depressing tone. One of the main ways Cather is able to provoke these sad emotions within the reader is through the suicide of Antonia's father, Mr. Shimerda. His death was unexpected by everyone and it is thought that homesickness is what drove him to take his own life. Homesickness was surely felt by Mr. Shimerda, as it was by many, but it was the failure to adequately find a way to provide for his family that sent Mr. Shimerda into a depressing downward spiral that left him no foreseeable alternative but to take his own life. The first descriptions of Mr. Shimerda are that of a successful businessman that had always provided well for his family. I noticed how white and well-shaped his own hands were. They looked calm, somehow, and skilled. His eyes were melancholy, and were set back deep under his brow. His face was ruggedly formed, but it looked like ashes - like something from which all the warmth and light had dried out. Everything about this old man was in keeping with his dignified manner (24) Mr. Shimerda was indeed a prosperous man in Bohemia, but had made his living in the business world, not by running a farm to provide for his family's needs. His hands show that he rarely performed hard manual labor, but that he did work hard with his hands to weave. His face however shows signs that he was already having doubts about the welfare of his family and their survival. The apparent glow that he must have once had was now replaced by the look of heavy thoughts. This came from the burden of providing for his family by way of very unfamiliar and difficult means. He had already lost a great deal of money in the family's traveling expenses and overpaid for their property. "They paid way too much for the land and for the oxen, horses and cookstove" (22). Mr. Shimerda must not have thought that he would have to support his family by means of plowing fields for food and actually building a home from materials gathered from the earth. He was a businessman and made a life for his family in Bohemia by working. "He was a weaver by trade; had been a skilled work man on tapestries and upholstery materials" (22). There was no work for him in this new country and he did not have the money to relocate his family. Certainly before he left Bohemia he believed that they had more than enough money to get by. The reality of his family's circumstances was just beginning to show their impact. Antonia points out to Jim that Mr. Shimerda looks ill "My papa sick all the time" Tony panted as we flew. He not look good, Jim" (36). It is obvious that Mr. Shimerda was terribly stressed and was staring to show it physically. Most likely he looked ill due to not sleeping and eating. Nevertheless, Mr. Shimerda wanted desperately do the best that he could for his family. He moved his family with the hopes of finding good husbands for his daughters and wealth and land for his son. He calls onto Jim to teach Antonia to read. He does so in a very pleading, helpless way which leaves an unforgettable memory in Jim's mind. Jim takes on the task, but unfortunately Mr. Shimerda gets little help from anyone else in the town for anything. Mr. Shimerda never really understands why he receives virtually little help from neighbors getting the farm going. He knows nothing about running the farm, and didn't even have the appropriate tools necessary. He and his family on the other hand are very trusting and would give the shirts off their backs to anyone who needed anything from them. "There never were such a people as the Shimerdas for wanting to give away everything they had" (38). He loses more hope for help when Krajiek tells him that even going into town for anything would be risking what little the family had left. The burden of not providing for his family only gets worse. It was a difficult situation for women as they were standing at the crossroads of two ideologies, which affected them. Whereas men could escape only the stereotype of the Negro, woman had to escape both stereotype of the Negro and stereotype of the woman at all. As a result both blacks and women were characterized as infantile, irresponsible, submissive and promiscuous. Moreover, in political and economical aspect they were dependent on white men. What more they have in common is that both groups were subservient, powerless in relations with white males. They were also considered to be a kind of outsiders and inferiors. Looking at the era of slavery we can point out two types of African-American women: Jezebel and Mammy. As far as the Mammys is concerned, we can think about Hattie McDaniel, the Mammy in â€Å"Gone with the Wind†. What we see is overweight black woman dressed in a long robe, a head kerchief and a big smile which follows her all the time. In the American history, Mammy was a woman who took care of whites family, especially looking for their children. She was in charge of domestic management and a house servant. She has a strength, experience and willing to do her duties. She was the main house servant and other people were subordinated to her. What is also important about Mammy, is that she was also a in-home psychologist who often had to serve as a friend and advisor. She was where white women could not be, including playing with children, cooking and cleaning. Most of us think of a Mammy as a maid, who had to work because of her slave status, but the truth is that she was more than that. Of course, she was doing all the things which maid usually does, but also she was like a family member, taking care of white familys personal issues. She was very protective, giving her care and love towards the white children. She was totally devoted to the family because she often did not have her own family and children. Also her interactions were limited due to her obligations. What is more Mammy normally was on the call at all hours, she almost did not have private time, she was often tired and exhausted, being under the scrutiny of the white family. There were some advantages for Mammy like leaving the plantation as waiting maid for their traveling mistresses, or learning to read and write by family members. Nowadays we can see the stereotype of Mammy in the movies or in the pictures, which show us fat, middle-aged, nonsexual and smiling black woman, but it is not how we should imagine and perceive Mammy. According to historical facts, they were not fat, because they did not eat a lot. They were rather young, they rarely passed the 50 limit. Furthermore, not always they were totally black, because they were very often daughters of women raped by white men. The sexual exploitation of black women by white men was unfortunately frequent situation during the antebellum period. In other words, black women were sexually exploited by rich whites, middle class whites, and poor whites. Sexual relations between blacks and whites whether consensual or rapes were taboo. However they occurred often. All black women and girls, regardless of their physical appearances, were vulnerable to being sexually assaulted by white men. Summing up, Mammy was really taking care of the children she was raising them and she was very important member of family. But we still have to point out that she was a slave and did not have much choice, so somehow she had to accept her fate. However if we compare Mammys duties with these of the field worker, we can admit that her situation was far way better. It was also less physically demanding. Comparing to the field worker Mammy could expect better treatment in terms of providing her with food, clothing, medical treatment and sometimes education. The Second type of black woman in times of slavery was Jezebel, who stood in the opposition of the Mammys image. Talking about Jezebel we should imagine young beautiful, sexual free, promiscuous woman, who was often governed by her libido. The perfect example of Jezebel was shown by actress Nina Mae McKinney in a movie â€Å"Hallelujah!†. In those days Jezebel completely stood in opposition not only to Mammy, but also to all white women who were portrayed as self respected with sexual purity. Jezebel was a woman who knew what she wanted, very seductive with lots of emotions and not ashamed of her sexuality. Black men after raping white women were castrated or hanged, whereas white men had no problems with law after raping black slave. Legally they could not do it so easily, because slave women were properties. White men often encouraged the slave women to have a sexual relation by giving them gifts. But also Jezabel made agreements with white men. Sometimes they had a choice to work on the field or to be a sexual attraction for a white male, what made her more independent than her hard working friends. Also black women agreed voluntarily for having sex with white men, because they knew that if they refused they could be forced to it and raped, beaten or even sold. By giving themselves to white masters they gained the chance for some advantages. If they were liked by them they were often awarded. This is one of the reasons why black women were called lust and promiscuous. Jezebel was the object of disdain, hate and envy from the side of white women. During those times white women were co vering all of they bodies with lots of clothes, because nudity was perceived as a lack of civility, morality and sexual restrain. They considered them to be immodest and sexually aberrant. As I have mentioned before, being Jezebel had many disadvantages, one of them was possibility of rape. As a result she often got pregnant. The owner benefited from this situation, because he had supply of next slaves. Sometimes slaves even got a prize for being pregnant, for example they were given a pig. Then according to those facts, we could call a Jezebel as a 18th and 19th century prostitute. Actually the truth is that this image continues till today. The half naked, pretty and hot image now looks good and contemporary African-American women very often want to be a Jezebel. However this image shows us not a slave and prostitute but an independent woman who is confident about her sexuality, her race and look. I think that nowadays the Jezebels image has replaced Mammys as the dominant image of black woman in pop culture. We can observe it in movies, video clips, even on the streets. However some of them may even do not know about the origins of the Jezebel image. On the other hand I think that we can also find lots of Mammys images among black women. From time to time the government tried to change policies, in order to improve these issues, however, the gap between rich and poor keeps increasing and there is very little improvement in healthcare and the economy. In fact, healthcare keeps on becoming costly. Research studies shown that, there are strong connection has been made between housing and health. The continuing inequities in health reflect socioeconomic inequalities including housing conditions and this has led to a renewal of studies in the past years in housing as a cause of health (Research Part: I, Ch. 4&5). In this research essay it will focus on housing as a cause of health, and study of a causal connection between the two can be identified. Hydroelectric power development at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, often involving many different watersheds, led to the establishment in the lower valleys of electricity-dependent industries, manufacturing such products as aluminium, chemicals, and specialty steels. Tourism, which began in the 19th century in a modest way, has become, since the end of World War II, a mass phenomenon. In one of the books, it stated that the far-east was a great location for the United States and USSR to plant their war centers. The far-east had the resources and was very efficient and good in strategic meanings. It was very important for the two groups to dominate the far east, but Korea was not really a land of resources. The society was bad economically and Americans knew that there was going to be more waste than profit.3One major purpose for the Americans to support Korea was not mainly because of their interest in Korea but to prevent the country from developing communism. Korea was in its worst state. The economy was poor and the only raw material it could support United States was graphite. The new technology a nd the chemical fertilizers brought Korea to produce more agricultural goods and food.4 This is one reason why the Korean War was considered to be a â€Å"forgotten war† A war with no clear conclusion and no actual benefit but just casualties and a great usage of money. Japan itself gained its opportunity to develop from the Korean War. American armies established bases and factories in order to produce weapons and defense utilities. This was also their time to get some war bonds from other countries. The Korean war led the United States to earn money and do business through establishing bases in neighbor counties using resources for their own good. In wars, United States tend to earn money. The Korean not only gave benefits to United States, but taught them strategic establishments and helped them achieve resources from other countries. The Korean War happened right after the Cold War, which involved in an arms race between the United States and USSR. From the influence of the Cold war, the Korean War was the after math of the arms race. They were both in a competition who can dominate more countries through spreading communism and capitalism and supporting allies. One main thing the two sides did were establishing bases in far- eastern area.5 The establishment of each bases had both advantages and disadvantages in the far-eastern area. In one of the graphs the United States had the advantages of area security. They established bases in Korea, Japan, and Pakistan where its air range reaches the objectives of USSR. Also defensively, the base was located in a good position, so it could encounter all kinds of attacks, especially Japan. There were many strategic routes that helped them easily defend the communists including man power. However, they faced may difficulties. Many countries like Korea needed excessi ve amount of aid . Food shortages and medical aids, these lack of needs restricted many of America’s power during the Korean War. Also, the communicating technology wasn’t developed as well causing America to lack in strategic ways compare to Soviet Union. The weakness of USA was the strength for the Soviets. 6From this information, it could be stated that they were competing to see who is the stronger one. Koreans feared both sides and they didn’t know what they were doing. This action shows importance to the Americans because this could of been referred as another cold war or the road to the next World War. President Truman gave a big impact with the conflict of communism. He believed that if one nation becomes a communist society, it will follow through. In other words it was referred as the â€Å"Domino theory†. The â€Å"Domino Theory† was first introduced by president Dwight D. Eisenhower on April 7, 1954 in one of his speeches. But the theory gave more impact during Truman’s presidency. Following the domino principle, Truman declared a foreign policy also known as the Truman Doctrine which was a program that helped the containment of communism. This doctrine was primarily financial, giving monetary aid to the countries who were in a battle with communism. 7 He also opened many nations the free trade, and open market programs unlike the communists. This was also an extension of the Cold War without any direct conflict. President Truman who tried to seek for world ‘peace’ declared a war against North Korea unofficially. Truman faced many internal criticisms from his actions toward â€Å"anti communism† . However, the war in North Korea was basically his fear toward the growing powers of China and USSR. During the 1950s, was also the time where people in the United States were in the state of red scare which made Truman even more concerned about the status of the spread of communism. 8 Also in June 27th, he made a statement that â€Å"communism has passed beyond the use of subversion to conquer independent nations and will now use invasion and war†. From his statement, many allied powers united to fight in North Korea. Blaming communism, he led the war into a bigger war causing more casualties.9 From this statement, it could be stated that the Cold war is not fully over and that competition between United States and USSR will continue. Another reason for United States to help Korea was for more allied powers. In case of war conditions, United States needed as much allied powers and supporters in order fight the communists. It might seem like the United States helped to prevent communism to spread, but logically, they wanted more members. Even during the Vietnam war, the United States ordered Korea to to help United States to fight against Vietnam which caused four thousand six thousand casualties out of three hundred thousand combatants.10 This was also a part of competition between Russia to see who can have more people on their team. United States supporting Korean during the Korean war resulted to be not free. To sum it up, the Korean War should get rid of the title of the â€Å"Forgotten War†. The events and the conflict between USSR and United States clearly show that the war showed many important values to the Americans. The competition, North Korean threat, and the leader ship of Truman explain how the war influenced the society right now. The war between Communism and Capitalism is still going on today. The ideals of people can be actually deadly causing wars and conflicts. Ik vind het beide wel interessante onderwerpen, maar als het over zijn vader gaat, vind ik het soms een beetje saai. Dat is vaak hetzelfde. Ik vind dat de schrijver het onderwerp goed uitwerkt. Hij vertelt alles op een manier zodat je helemaal in het verhaal opgaat, omdat hij het vertelt zo als hij het meemaakt. Ik denk wel eens na over de onderwerpen oorlog en het overlijden van een kind, en door dit boek zijn mijn gedachten daarover niet veranderd. Gebeurtenissen. Ik denk dat de belangrijkste gebeurtenissen zijn de woedeaanvallen van Boudewijns vader, dat Boudewijn in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis komt en later in een gewoon ziekenhuis. En later in het verhaal dat Boudewijn een zoontje krijgt, dat Boudewijns vader overlijdt en dat daarna Boudewijns zoontje overlijdt. De gebeurtenissen zijn allemaal goed gedetailleerd en duidelijk beschreven, heel uitgebreid. De gebeurtenissen worden allemaal door de hoofdpersoon zelf verteld, dus de gedachten en gevoelens van de hoofdpersoon spelen denk ik een even grote rol als de gebeurtenissen want het gaat allemaal over hetzelfde en is dus ook wel even belangrijk. De gebeurtenis die de meeste indruk op mij heeft gemaakt is wanneer Micky overlijdt in het ziekenhuis. Dat vond ik zo zielig, dat Boudewijn zelf moest beslissen of Micky bleef leven of niet, heel ontroerend. De hoofdpersoon van dit verhaal is Boudewijn en andere belangrijke personen zijn vader Rainer (als Boudewijn het over zijn jeugd heeft) en zijn zoontje Micky (als hij het over de tijd vlak voor Mickys dood heeft). Rainer is de vader van Boudewijn, Micky is het zoontje van Boudewijn. De belangrijkste gebeurtenissen zijn in het begin de woedeaanvallen van Boudewijns vader, dat Boudewijn in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis wordt opgenomen en daarna blindedarmontsteking krijgt. En later dat zijn vader doodgaat en dat Micky van de trap valt en in het ziekenhuis komt en doodgaat. Door deze gebeurtenissen verandert het leven van Boudewijn heel erg. Doordat zijn vader zo verknipt is door de oorlog interesseert Boudewijn zich daar erg voor. En als zijn vader doodgaat en daarna Micky ook, vindt Boudewijn dat heel erg, en is hij heel verdrietig. De gebeurtenissen spelen zich eerst af in het ouderlijk huis van Boudewijn in Wassenaar een paar jaar na de oorlog en later in zijn nieuwe woonplaats Leide n en gedeeltelijk ook in Amsterdam. (15 tot 16 jaar na die tijd) Hoofdstuk 1 Boudewijn gaat voor het eerst op schoolreis . Hij heeft van zijn moeder 3 kwartjes gekregen zijn vader vindt dat veel te veel en pakt hem een kwartje af . Ze willen met school naar de Duitse grens toe rijden en dan een paar stappen op Duitse bodem zetten . Hij doet allemaal rare dingen en met Bevrijdingsdag is het altijd ruzie in huis . Als ze met school bij de grens aankomen blijft Boudewijn bij de leraar . Vlak daarna ziet hij een vlinder vliegen . Zijn vader is gek op vlinders .Het is een landkaartje . Boudewijn gaat achter de vlinder aan en vangt hem . Plots is hij in Duitsland terwijl dat niet mocht van zijn pa . Hij word terug naar de bus gebracht door douaniers . Zijn leraar is boos . Als hij thuiskomt verteld hij zijn moeder wat hij gedaan heeft . Ze zegt dat hij niets moet zeggen tegen zijn vader . Als Boudewijn thuiskomt zegt hij tegen zijn dat hij een vlinder gevangen heeft . Zijn vader is blij met de vlinder .Dan verteld Boudewijn zijn vader dat de vlinder in Duitsland gevangen is . Zijn vader begint te vloeken en te tieren . De vlinder valt in duizend stukjes op de grond . Een week later praat Boudewijn's vader pas weer tegen Boudewijn .
